Each year Clean and Green rounds up as many volunteers as it can to help clean up the shoreline at Hawkshaw Lagoon and Memorial. When we arrived (Jay, Nancy, Chris and I), we signed in, got our gloves and trash bags (provided by CAG) and got our work orders. We split up into groups and focused on the bay front from the Hawkshaw Memorial to the beginning of the 3-mile bridge and in the opposite direction of the Memorial just east of Seville Historic District. It appeared that most of the litter came from inland rather than the bay. There were plastic bags, utensils, fast food boxes, cans, old clothing, lots of cigarette butts and the list goes on. We felt pride in helping beautify the area and it was a means of getting some exercise and fresh air. After spending so many months indoors, it felt exhilirating. It was really nice seeing other organizations and individuals participating. The Navy was there, a cub scout group and members of a Mardi Gras Krewe. For me it was fun coming out to work with friends for a good cause. It was a very rewarding experience and a perfect way to spend the day. I’m ready for the next one.
