Since its beginning, Star Trek has been about scientific discovery, and its fascinating technology has served as inspiration for real-world scientists. In keeping with this spirit, the USS Continuum is enthusiastic to be involved with “I LOVE Science” (Increasing Local Opportunities for Volunteers Enthusiastic about Science). According to the IHMC website, this “is a volunteer program aimed at increasing the frequency of hands-on science activities in our schools, inspiring future scientists, and improving FCAT science scores.”
Volunteers will spend one hour a month during the school day to help 5th graders learn about science. (Actually being a scientist or having a scientific degree is NOT required. Having enthusiasm about science is).
A training session was scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 28 at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, 40 South Alcaniz Street in Pensacola. However, with Tropical Storm (soon to be Hurricane) Isaac expected to reach the Gulf Coast by Tuesday, it is expected to be rescheduled. However, for those interested in being involved in Escambia County, FL, please contact Nancy Stanley.
