Starting next month, we’re changing up our schedule of events. Our Dinner at Ten Forward monthly dinners will now take place on the first Monday at 6:30 p.m., and our Monthly Meetings will take place on the 3rd Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Continuum plans to kick it into high-gear this September!
First, at the conclusion of our meeting this Sunday, we’ll continue our discussion of Star Trek uniforms and other costumes. If you’re interested in costume-making (with or without a pattern) or if you’d like to get one made, you’re more than welcome to join us. This is NOT limited to just Starfleet uniforms but also includes anything throughout Star Trek’s 49-year history. Just bring us some pictures, and we’ll go from there.
Second, at 7 pm on Thursday the 10th we’ll be meeting at Books-a-Million to begin discussing plans to build a TOS transporter room. As with all our displays, we like to keep them portable, so we’ll be looking at blueprints, pictures, and other tips to come up with a plan as to how to best do that.
And third, we’ll be at BRACE’s Youth Emergency Preparedness (YEP) Expo at Washington High School on Saturday the 12th from 10 am to 2 pm. BRACE is the Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies, and they’ll be having “‘Survivor Land’ to prepare children, youth and families for disasters through the region’s largest “Youth Emergency Preparedness” (YEP!) expo.” Continuum members will be there in costume with other sci-fi characters. For more information, check out their website.
As always, all members and visitors are welcome to attend any event we have listed here. For more information, contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
It’s been a busy summer,
and there have been a few changes here at the Continuum that I’d like to make everyone aware of.
For the past several months, our members have been discussing fundraising efforts. We have a lot of necessary expenses and have long-since been wanting to spend more of what we raise on our member, such as helping our members get Star Trek uniforms and other costumes, helping them with travel expenses to conventions, and building and maintaining our displays. Those things highlight our creativity and talents and encourage others to be involved.
And so, just this last month, we voted to raise our dues to $5 a month, plus $1 for each additional member of the same household. Other fundraisers used (i.e., donations from conventions) will be spent on these special projects for our members. Now, we realize that’s quite a jump from our previous dues of $12 a year. Anytime we raise prices, there’s a chance people could decide to leave. But not having goals or not providing something a bit unique people that they can’t find anywhere else can also discourage people from joining and sticking around. So we feel this right decision for us to do. We have a vision to make the Continuum the best it can possibly be. However, those that joined when the dues were only $12 plus $2 for each additional member of the same house
hold are “grandfathered in” until their membership comes up for renewal.
Also earlier this month: the Continuum had a great time at the Pensacola Comic Convention, August 8-9. Many thanks to the members who helped me run our table: Peggy Moshell, Mark Wright, Christina Tuttle, and Paul Jacobs. We made a few changes there that we hope many of you will find of interest. The most obvious being the addition of the green screen behind our Captain’s Chair that’ll allow us to have bridge pics photoshopped in. Check out the finished products found here.
We’ve also upgraded our speakers to the Chair, thanks to Chris Cazalet, which take up less room and have better quality sound. And our display boards have been replaced with moving Prezi display, featuring photos and text about the Continuum. All changes seem to have worked very well, and we hope to be using them in the future.
And finally, now that the convention is behind us, we’re looking forward to doing more costume and display-creation workshops. Keep checking back at our website for future dates. I’ve also been talking with the Parjai Squad about Costume Bowl II, which we’re planning for April 2016. We’ll be doing our first meeting very shortly; look for more information to be coming soon.
It’s been a long time coming, but the Continuum’s photo galleries have been updated to include all of our events up until the present. Check them out to see what we’ve been up to.
It’s been quite awhile since I’ve been able to update this site on everything that’s been happening. As always, we’ve been extremely busy.
Pensacon 2015: (Yes, it has been that long). The crew of the Continuum had a great time at this year’s Pensacon, and we’re looking forward to bigger things next year. We’re were somewhat spread out this year though with our table with Nomad and Vulcan lute dispalys in the Crowne Plaza lobby and our Captain’s Chair and new Helm/Nav console over at the Deck Bar. (The STARFLEET Milton chapter USS Harry Mudd was also with us in the lobby but had their NuTrek Captain’s Chair and Helm/Nav console in the Crowne Plaza’s bar).
This year’s event was busier than ever! And I have no idea how they’re going to handle their space problems outside of building a new convention center or finding more hotels & using the trolleys as none are in walking distance. There was a waiting line just to get into the dealer’s room on Saturday; many of those working the dealer’s room were afraid to leave in fear they would not be able to get back in. Who knows what’s going to happen next year the con’s hotel block at the Crowne Plaza has already been sold out as well as all the VIP passes?
Well, it’s good to be back. It has been a crazy holiday season, and as always, that cuts fun time with the Continuum a bit short. But life now is slowly getting back to normal…
Or maybe not so “slowly.” And what the heck is “normal” anyway? I’ve gone from been busy at work to being busy with the Continuum all in one swoop.
But for starters, I am glad our website is back up and running. We had a few problems with updating WordPress and eventually it got to the point where it looked like our website threw-up the alphabet. Now that we’ve gotten that worked out, we’ll be sharing more news from our little corner of the universe.
Two very big items coming up in the early part of this year:
First, Pensacon, February 27 to March 1 at the Pensacola Bay Center and Crowne Plaza Hotel. We had such a great time last year, and we’re really looking forward to Year Two. Especially since they’ll be more Star Trek guests of honor in attendance this go-round. Don’t forget to check out our fan table (where we hope to have some new display to go along with our repaired Captain’s Chair) and our fan panel — a Family Feud-type game we’re teaming-up with our sister chapter from Mobile to bring you. We’ll also be helping out with this year’s Star Trek-themed party at the Deck. More details on all of that coming very soon.
Second… and I don’t want to reveal too much about this just yet, not until we get a few more things are finalized… but I, as ship’s CO have been secretly meeting with leadership of the 501st Stormtrooper Legion’s Parjai Squad to organize a charity bowling fundraiser at the end of the April. A little Star Trek and Star Wars fan action that looks to be a lot of fun.
2014 was a great year for us a group. Our membership is back on the rise after a brief dip, and we hope to see it continue to soar. We hope to be more involved in community service than in year’s past. And we’ll be looking at organizing some fun fundraisers to allow us to handle all this excitement! (Don’t forget to check out our Amazon Associates Store to help us with that 🙂 ).
Just one more year to go before the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, and I want to make sure we’re ready to open the floodgates of positive possibilities! And we hope that you’ll all be with us for the ride.
One change and one addition we would like to make you all aware of:
- Our General Meeting’s location has been changed to the The Game Space located at 91 Airport Blvd in Pensacola. These are typically held 7 pm on the first Sunday of the month, our next one being scheduled for September 7.
- We will be having a Pensacon meeting 1 pm on Sunday, September 28 at TBS Comics, 6895A North 9th Ave. While the con doesn’t start until the end of February, we’re hoping to get a head start in deciding the Continuum’s involvement, including our recruiting table, displays, panel, costumes, and the like. Come bring your ideas! We’re also hoping to get nearby STARFLEET chapters involved.
As always, the public is invited, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Unfortunately, it’s been some time some time since I submitted any information to this website regarding the Continuum’s activities. It’s been a busy time between work, family, even running the Continuum. Nevertheless, it is important to keep our membership and the general public aware of what we have going on. And the best way to rectify that is just to rectify it: start making posts again.
I. Recent changes in the Command Staff
I’ve recently asked Peter Arce to serve as our Second Officer and Christina Tuttle to serve as Counselor. For the first time this year, we now have a full Command Department. The five of us — myself, XO Peggy Moshell, CFO Mark Wright, Peter, and Christina — will be meeting in the near future to get an idea of where we’re looking to take the Continuum throughout the remainder of 2014 and on into 2015.
II. Damage to the Captain’s Chair
It was bound to happen sooner or later. In fact, I’m a little surprised it hasn’t happened sooner with all the many people that sit in our Captain’s Chair and bounce around in it like it’s completely unbreakable. Don’t get me wrong — our Captain’s Chair is made out of some very sturdy wood, and some of the recent improvements we’ve made to it help keep it accident-free. But we still cringe every now-and-again with some of the abuse it receives from some. But, ironically enough, the damage it received at this year’s Mobicon didn’t come from someone sitting in it, but from an accidental misstep when we were taking it down. Repairs are now underway, and we hope to have everything back to normal by this time next month.
We’ve started taking the Captain’s Chair to other conventions outside of the Pensacola area. Not only were we at Mobicon this year, helping out the Mobile chapter USS Jubilee, but we were also at ALT Con in Tallahassee a few months back and look forward to attending other conventions along the Gulf Coast in the near future. As funding and our planning improves, we hope to extend the area and attend even more conventions throughout the Southeast United States.
The Continuum will be Paracon once again this year. Come by our table for a chance to find out more about our organization, get your picture taken in the Captain’s Chair, and check out some of the Star Trek Playmates collectibles that you can win.
IV. Manna Food Donations
Back in April, Pensacola suffered from some extensive thunderstorms. While many areas remained unaffected (except for having a lot of rain), a few parts suffered from flooding and other water damage. One such community service organization that was hit extremely hard was Manna Food Pantries which lost all of their non-perishable food items.
Months have passed, and for a lot of us that weren’t hurt by the storm, it’s very easy to forget that there ever was a storm. Life has returned to normal. And while there has been a considerable amount of community support after the storm, Manna Food Pantries still hasn’t completely recovered from what they lost.
The Continuum was happy to be involved with Heroes for Hunger: Benefit for Manna Food Pantries last May, and we are continuing our efforts to raise funds for this important charity. Starting in April, we have donated $105 and will continue to raise money until the end of August. I, personally, encourage all of our members, as well as the general public, to continue to donate so Manna can “leave no one unfed.”
V. Social activities
Plans are in the works for various social activities: quarterly parties, movie showings (namely Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Hercules, Lucy, and Guardians of the Galaxy all within the next month), Star Trek viewings starting up once again, and gaming events. Keep checking out our website for future happenings.
