Every once in a while, the crew of the USS Continuum finds itself in the midst of a busy time. Calendars are jammed full of events — celebrations, appearances, and our preparations for it all! I know. It’s been months since I last updated this blog, and by all appearances, it might appear that nothing is going on around here. The truth is anything but. We move from one crazy to the next: crazy from the Holiday Season, crazy from preparing for Pensacon, crazy from preparing for the Costume Bowl…
Now we’re in a slightly different form of crazy: not centering around an event, per se, but on recruiting and fundraising — two things the Continuum needs right now to do all the cool things we want to do. Granted, we’re always hoping to do those two, but this time, we’re just taking a bit more focus between events.
But don’t worry: we’ll get back to the craziness of preparing for events very, very shortly. The 30th Anniversary of The Next Generation is in September. And then we have the premier of Discovery and then Quest-Con before we’re back into the Holiday Season and then onto 2018.
So what’s been going on in the meantime?
It’s one of the reasons the USS Continuum exists. We’re “Star Trek Enthusiasts” – people who are not just dreaming about that optimistic future, but people who are looking for ways to make it a reality.
… because there were times it certainly felt that way with all the craziness going on during the first couple of months in 2017! 😀 It’s hard to believe that two weeks we were having a great time at Pensacon. Many thanks to all the people that came by to see our Star Trek displays featured at Atlas Oyster House. And once again, our thanks to the staff of Atlas for being gracious hosts!
If you haven’t already heard: we have a brand new Star Trek display that made its debut at Atlas. Introducing the TOS Tranporter, here joining our Captain’s Chair and Helm/Navigation console!
Many thanks to our members, who helped us set-up & take down our displays for Pensacon:
- Paul Jacobs, who not only hosted our Display Workshops, but also did the most work on the Transporter, occasionally working on his own, and coming up with the design of the padd
- Dan Ditto and Chris Weidel, who helped with workshops
- Don Villines, who transported all displays to and from their location
We look forward to bring these to future events. But don’t expect us to stop here. We hope to continue the work for even more great Star Trek items. We are excited about an additional venue we’ll be using for next year that we’ll be telling you more about in the months ahead.
Recently, members of the USS Continuum have decided to make a few changes in our meetings that will help us better support a local business that has supported us for years!
Starting on Wednesday, October 5, we’ll be moving our first Wednesday meeting to Maximilian Coffee. It’s located at 3419 N 12th Ave in Pensacola. The meeting time of 6:30 pm will remain the same.
On Saturday, October 15, we’re moving our third Saturday meeting right next door to the Cactus Flower Cafe, 3425 N 12th Ave. Our meeting time will also change: moving up to 10 a.m.
We’ve known owner Lee Kafeety since 2009 when we met her at the (then) Rave Cinemas during the Star Trek movie premiere. As Lee is also a Trek fan, we’ve visited the Cactus Flower several times over the years. The Cactus Flower Cafe was also one of our sponsors for the last two Costume Bowls.
The USS Continuum looks forward to continue working with local businesses like the Cactus Flower to better serve our community.
Part of the reason the USS Continuum exists is to help promote Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic vision. We do this in many different ways, but one of the more prominent things we do is be involved in community service and to support other charitable organizations.
Last month, the Continuum teamed up with the 501st Legion’s Parjai Squad for the Costume Bowl II. On Sunday, April 24, we raised $1,100 to support Manna Food Pantries and the Gulf Coast Kid’s House and had a fun time doing it. Many thanks to the members of both organizations who came and to the several local businesses that provided support.
The community service continues tomorrow morning at the SAFER Santa Rosa “Alien Invasion” Expo happening at the Gulf Breeze Community Center. Come, learn how your home and business against disasters and your photo taken in our Captain’s Chair.
And next month, crew members will be handing out tribbles and other items as they pose for pictures in uniform/costume at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital on June 18.
Just a quick note… 2016 is already gearing up to a amazing (yet very busy) year! We’ve just finished up with Pensacon where we were excited to meet people who stopped by our fan table at the Crowne Plaza. We are also very excited to be a part of the “Costume Cosplay Day” at the Pensacola Intergalactic Airport. (Check out the photos from the event here). Also, many thank to Atlas Oyster House for hosting the TOS Bridge Set — Captain’s Chair & Helm/Navigation console — during the weekend; always a great staff, great location, and great food!
With last weekend’s Region 2 Summit finished, the Continuum is turning its focus first to our yard sale a week from this Saturday and to the Costume Bowl. Last year’s Bowl was a huge success, raising over $1,300 for Manna Food Pantries and Gulf Coast Kid’s House, and we hope to raise even more this year.
And plenty more things are coming:
- Display workshops. The next one is set for Saturday, April 2 as we do some touchups for the Helm/Nav console and then transport our attention to… ahem, the Transporter Console & Pad.
- “Star Trek Day” to be celebrated a day early on Monday, April 4 in uniform/costume as part of April’s “Dinner at Ten Forward”
- Costuming workshops
- Star Trek Viewings
- Star Trek Gaming
- More public appearances, including future conventions and the Star Trek Beyond weekend premiere.
A few changes in our upcoming events:
First, the Continuum is now starting to meet twice a month to keep up with its busy schedule. The first meeting will be on the first Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The second will be on the third Saturday at 3 p.m. Both will be at Village Inn outside of Cordova Mall. However…
We will not be meeting in the month of December. The holiday season is a very busy time for everyone, so we have traditionally cancelled our meetings during that month. Our next meeting this Saturday will be the last of 2015. We will resume our meetings on Wednesday, January 6, 2016.
We will also not be having our “Dinner at Ten Forward” monthly social in December as it will be very to our Anniversary Dinner/Christmas Party on the 1st. We do plan to have some costuming and display construction workshops during the month. More information coming soon.
Starting next month, we’re changing up our schedule of events. Our Dinner at Ten Forward monthly dinners will now take place on the first Monday at 6:30 p.m., and our Monthly Meetings will take place on the 3rd Saturday at 3 p.m.
