A few notes about what’s happening on the USS Continuum:
We are now going to only one meeting a month. In the past few months, we have had a great turn out at our Business Meetings. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about our social meetings. So we’ll keep our meeting at Books-A-Million on the 1st Friday of the month, and then have a social activity of sorts at some other time.
And speaking of a social activity, we’ve decided for this month to go see Green Lantern, opening in theaters this Friday, June 17. We will be seeing the 8:40 pm showing at the Rave Bayou 15 (5149 Bayou Blvd, Pensacola). You can purchase tickets here.
We’re asking members and visitors alike to follow us on Facebook. We will be featuring our events there and strongly encourage people to RSVP to each of them. For some events, we need to have a minimum number of people showing up just to make the event worthwhile. With others, we need to make special preparations ahead of time. And it is always nice to know who’s planning to make it, so we can make sure to meet up.
Forgive the delay in posting this, but last month, the Continuum walked away with three awards from the Region 2 Summit in Tampa, FL. Congratulations to all!
(Now, I think it would really be cool if if I could make another such announcement come August! 😉 ).
Fifty years ago today, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to enter space. For the past ten years, people from all over the world have been participating in Yuri’s Night. And now, for the second year in a row, members of the Continuum, along with those of the Escambia Amateur Astronomers’ Association and the National Space Society, will be celebrating this achievement at Yuri’s Night Pensacola this Saturday, April 16 at the Pensacola State College Planetarium from 2 to 9 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Science-fact or science fiction costumes are highly encouraged.
YNP will feature:
- NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center.
- Planetarium shows. Schedule coming soon.
- Telescopes for day and night-time viewing. Weather projections for the area keep getting better and better.
- Free giveaways given out every hour.
- Various displays. Including the Continuum’s own replica of the Captain Chair from the Original Series.
- YNP’s Astronaut-Mascot.
- Kid’s activities.
- Face painting.

Chris, Katie, and myself visited the USS Jubilee at Bimini Bob’s in Daphne, AL, this past Sunday. It was a great time to get together and see what another chapter in STARFLEET is doing. We discussed the upcoming Yuri’s Night Pensacola and a few other activities our two groups could possibly do together.
On Saturday, March 19, Continuum crew members enjoyed our first ever “Star Trek Putt Putt Tournament” at Sam’s Fun City.
Four of us participated in Starfleet uniforms as we played eighteen holes of golf, but it was Peggy Moshell who won the tournament with a score of 51. Having the best score earned her the Star Trek collector’s plate of “The Menagerie.” Congratulations, Peggy!
The final scores were
Jay – 58
Katie – 64
Peggy – 51
Bob – 74
Kaydmaw – 69
Chris – 60
We look forward to having another “Star Trek Putt Putt Tournament” later this year.
The Continuum will be at UWF‘s Festival on the Green on Saturday, April 2. Look for us between Building 22 (the Commons) and 30 next to the Flight Simulator.
We’re doing putt-putt “Star Trek style.”
The event is scheduled for this Saturday, March 19 at Sam’s Fun City (6709 Pensacola Blvd), but we have changed the time to start at 2 p.m.
At last weekend’s Region 2 Summit, the Continuum purchased two Star Trek collectible plates: one featuring “The Menagerie” and the other “The Tholian Web.” One of these plates will go to the winner and the other one will be saved for another, perhaps a future putt-putt tournament.
However, to win a plate, you must not only have the best score, but you must also be in a properly-worn Star Trek costume. Meaning, if you have a Federation Starfleet uniform top, you must have black pants and black shoes to go with it. And that also means Continuum shirts, STARFLEET shirts, and Star Trek shirts are ineligible.
A couple of changes we want to make sure everyone is aware of:
1. The Social Meeting scheduled for Friday, March 18 has been moved. We are still at PSC but across campus at the Computer Lab Auditorium, right across from the Planetarium’s main entrance in Building 21. (Continuum crew members will recognize this as the same meeting space we had before we moved to Building 97).
2. The April 1 Business Meeting will be at the PSC Geology Lab, located in the same building as the Planetarium. With Yuri’s Night Pensacola being two weeks away, we’ll be mapping out all of our display tables.
This past weekend crew members Chris Hammonds, Bruce Dolan, DJ O’Brien, Kaydmaw Fass, and myself had a great time at the Region 2 Summit in Tampa, FL. This was the first time the Summit was in two locations: the Holiday Inn Suites and the Museum of Science & Technology (MOSI). The panels were a bit spread out, the drive was a bit lengthly, I had to constantly deal with grief from my XO (:P), and I had to bend my knees every time my picture with our rather short Regional Coordinator. (Geez, short people are everywhere). But, all-in-all, we still had a great time and are looking forward to the 2012 joint-summit for Region 2 and 3 in Hammond, LA.
Oh, and we have yet another announcement regarding this year’s summit, but we’re saving that one for our meeting this Friday night.
Throughout January, the Continuum has been discussing activities for this year, and I wanted to post this to give everyone a chance to see what all we plan to do in 2011. Although all of these have already been added to our calendars on this site, here’s our list, starting with our next event.
All of these are open to the public, but keep in mind, this is by no means final. Things are subject to change. New ideas and new opportunities are likely to come away. We may have to cancel some things for various reasons or change some dates. But this is what we’re looking at right now. If there are any changes, we’ll be sure to let you know.
